Tons annual goat meat demand in Zambia
Tons currently supplied domestically
The Industry Challenge
Over 60% of Zambia’s population lives in rural areas. Most of those households raise goats. Zambia’s annual demand for goat meat is 60,000 tons — but domestic supply barely reaches 1,000 tons.
The gap exists not because goats aren’t there. It is because there is no organized system to get them from the smallholder farmer to the urban consumer. Farmers produce. Buyers need. The connection never happens at scale.
Business & Origins
Zamgoat saw the same story that Africa Eats sees across the portfolio: a commodity that exists in abundance on smallholder farms, and a formal market that can’t access it.
It built the missing link: buying goats directly from rural smallholder farmers, supplying them with improved breeding stock, processing the meat in Lusaka, and selling goat sausages and biltong to retail stores, restaurants, hotels, and meat suppliers across the city. The business model turns a subsistence asset into a supply chain.
The export opportunity is significant. Saudi Arabia alone has expressed demand for 100,000 tons of goat meat annually — a market worth over $4 million — that has received not a single exported ton.
Value Proposition & Business Model
Zamgoat buys goats from smallholder farmers across Zambia, provides improved breeding stock to increase supply quality, processes the meat at its Lusaka facility, and sells packaged goat products — sausages and biltong — to formal retail, restaurants, and hotels in Lusaka, with expansion planned across Zambia’s Copperbelt and urban markets.
