The Industry Challenge

Lake Victoria was once one of the most productive freshwater fisheries on earth. Overfishing and ecosystem degradation decimated it. In Uganda’s Eastern region — Tororo, Busia, Malaba — communities that had built their food security and income around the lake were left without either.

The wild fish were gone. The infrastructure for commercial aquaculture barely existed. And fish — high-protein, affordable, culturally embedded — remained a food that people wanted and couldn’t reliably get.

Business & Origins

Geossy was incorporated in 2009 with a clear read on the situation: rebuilding Uganda’s fish supply didn’t mean waiting for the lake to recover. It meant building commercial fish farming from the ground up.

The bizi operates a 19-acre hatchery in Tororo District, holds a 50-year commercial fish license to farm in Lake Victoria, and runs two feed mills — giving it control over the inputs that determine the quality and cost of everything it produces. It produces tilapia for local and regional markets, and sells fish feeds and fingerlings to the network of 250 fish farmers it supports in Eastern Uganda.

It also trained over 1,600 farmers on sustainable aquaculture — cage construction, best practice, input quality — building the supply infrastructure that didn’t exist before it arrived.

Value Proposition & Business Model

Geossy is a commercial aquaculture operation producing tilapia, fish feeds, and fingerlings from its base in Tororo District, Eastern Uganda.

Its operations span the full production chain: hatchery, feed mill, grow-out cages on Lake Victoria, and a distribution network reaching 135 local fish vendors — the majority of them youth and women. Its feed and fingerling sales extend its footprint beyond its own production, supporting hundreds of independent fish farms in the region.
